What are wireless fire alarm systems?
As the name suggests, wireless fire alarm systems communicate through radio signals and do not require cabling. Devices are battery operated, but the system works in exactly the same way as a conventional wired fire alarm system, and all systems supplied and installed by Surrey Tech Services conform to BS5839.
Is a wireless system suitable for me?
A wireless fire alarm system does not require cables or any additional attachments, and can therefore be easily installed anywhere without the need for costly cabling work, damage to walls and redecoration afterwards. Devices are portable and the system can easily be added to in extensions or outbuildings. Wireless systems are ideal for buildings with restrictions such as listed or historical buildings, and the installation time is relatively short.
There are disadvantages however. Wireless devices are subject to the same standards as wired systems and need to be totally reliable. The technology is complex and wireless systems are therefore more expensive than wired fire alarm systems, but cheaper to install. The distance for transmission to the control panel is limited and operation can therefore be constrained to a certain area, and as wireless fire alarm systems use batteries, regulations dictate that they must be regularly tested and replaced.
