How To Find a Reputable Commercial Electrician

Electrical work is a dangerous thing in any building, requiring expert attention and skilled professionals, but on commercial premises you need to exercise even more caution. Your building is likely to be populated by a mix of people, including staff, guests, students and the general public, all of whose safety you’re responsible for.

With this in mind, choosing a commercial electrician for your site is not something you should do aimlessly. This month, we’ve got a guide for you on how to find a reputable commercial electrician in London and the Home Counties.

Establish your requirements

The starting point of hiring any contractor for your commercial premises – whether you operate in the education, health care, local authority or public sector – should be your requirements. When you know your budget and your needs, you can better find an electrician to match.

Some key things to consider are:

  • Is the work going to be regular or a one-off job?
  • Will you need regular communication with them?
  • Do you have multiple sites that need attention?
  • Do you have certain checks they need to clear, such as DBS checks?
  • What is your budget?

That last point comes with a caveat because, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. You should never cut corners when it comes to electrical safety, but find a commercial electrician who will work within your parameters for a reasonable price.

Check their reviews

For your first point of reference, take a look online at reviews left by other customers to see what their score is and what people have to say about them. You can sometimes find these on the company’s website itself or on third-party sites. These days, people are becoming a little more suspicious about reviews left online, but if a company has a lot of reviews and the comments left seem genuine, it’s a good sign.

Alternatively, see if a company has any commercial case studies or ask them for a referral client they’re happy for you to contact to find out about their service levels.

Please see here for Surrey Tech Services’ case studies.

Check their qualifications

Qualified electricians are the only people who should be carrying out electrical services in your building. The reasons for this should be obvious, but safety is the number one priority. If an electrician has qualifications, then you can count on them to know what they’re doing in all aspects of their work.

At Surrey Tech Services Ltd, all of our commercial electricians are qualified to Cities & Guilds NVQ Level 3 and above, giving you confidence in our team when we work on your site.

Check their accreditations

Not all electricians will operate on a level that earns them accreditations, and that might be fine if it’s a family friend you trust carrying out small work in your home. But for any business or commercial operation, you’ll want the confidence that comes with knowing a contractor has met certain levels within the industry before letting them on your premises.

The NICEIC is the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. So look out for commercial electricians approved by this body for further assurance.

Get some quotes

When you have a shortlist of companies to choose from that you’re happy with based on the above, it might be worth contacting them for quotes. Again, price shouldn’t be the driving force in choosing your electrician, but you’ll get to know what’s included in their work and how easy they are to communicate with.
